Semester In Review
Spring 1999
Our biggest event this semester, by far, was Dr.Bernstein's lecture on April 14, 1999. Dr. Bernstein was last on the RPI campus six years ago to give a speech in conjunction with the school of Architecture. Although attendance was less than expected (40 people), we presented an extensive advertising campaign covering nearly all forms of media.
Specifically, we advertised successfully in the following places:
Even after Dr. Bernstein's speech had ended,we kept making news! We were interviewed by 3 reporters, from the Times Union, the Daily Gazette. Although not filmed, we attracted the interest of the local ABC affiliate, WTEN.
We were the main focus of three printed feature stories: "Call to Volunteer Does Not Move All", "Small RPI Club Opposes Community Service Day", and "Self is First - RPI fans of Rand's Objectivism Avoid Volunteering". Two of these feature stories included photographs. A reporter from the Sunday Gazette was present at the lecture.
As with any issue of controversy, we met with people of opposing views. The Editorial and Opinion columns came to life in the Times Union, Daily Gazette, and The Poly.
In other activities, we were present at the "January Jamboree" spring semester Activity Fair. Not many people were present that day.
On February 19, the Lally School of Management & Technology hosted a debate, "Should Microsoft be Broken Up?" We were present at this, voiced our opinion, and presented a small advertising campaign of the ARI flyer, "Microsoft and the Moral Case for Economic Freedom", and a brief statement on our site.
In January, we introduced two new email lists, OBJECTIVIST-ANNC-L and OBJECTIVIST-DISC-L@lists.rpi.edu. Over 50 "digests" have been sent by our discussion list server.
In related news, an Ayn Rand stamp was released and ARI reports that sales of Rand's paperback non-fiction and fiction have risen recently.
